Stars Of The Week

NEW YORK—St. Louis Blues goaltender Chris Mason, Vancouver Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin and Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Mar. 29.

FIRST STAR—CHRIS MASON, G, ST. LOUIS BLUES

Mason posted a 4-0-0 record with a 1.72 goals-against average and .930 save percentage as the Blues (37-30-9) climbed to eighth place in the Western Conference after starting the week in 11th. Mason recorded his fifth shutout of the season with 22 saves in a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Mar. 24, made 21 stops in a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Mar. 26 and closed the week by backstopping to the Blues to consecutive victories over the Columbus Blue Jackets in a key home-and-home series. He stopped 24 shots and three of four shootout attempts in a 4-3 victory at St. Louis Mar. 28 and made 26 saves in a 5-2 victory at Columbus Mar. 29. Mason, who has started the Blues’ past 27 games, has posted a 20-7-5 record in his past 32 outings with four shutouts, a .926 save percentage and 2.03 goals against average. He is currently on a five-game win streak.

SECOND STAR—DANIEL SEDIN, LW, VANCOUVER CANUCKS

Sedin tallied eight points (four goals, four assists) in four games as the Canucks (41-25-9) closed within one point of the Calgary Flames for the Northwest Division lead. Sedin began the week by notching one goal and one assist in a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Mar. 24. He recorded one assist in a 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues Mar. 26, notched the game-winning goal and one assist in a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche Mar. 27 and tallied two goals, including the game-winner, and one assist in a 4-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Mar 29. Sedin leads the Canucks in points (76), goals (30) and game-winning goals (seven).

THIRD STAR—CAM WARD, G, CAROLINA HURRICANES

Ward earned NHL ‘Three Star’ recognition for the second consecutive week, having been named the League’s First Star for period ending Mar. 22. He posted a 3-0-0 record with a 1.32 goals-against average and .957 save percentage as the Hurricanes (42-28-7) climbed to fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Ward made 37 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers Mar. 23, blocked 21 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators Mar. 25 and stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils Mar. 28. Ward has started each of the Hurricanes’ past 24 games, the longest such streak of his NHL career. He has posted a 16-6-2 record and two shutouts in that span.
