from Edward Fraser of the Hockey News,
Trading for prospects and draft picks can drastically improve your chances of making a Cup run in the future, so why settle for two or three playoff home games now when you could have upwards of 16 in the not-too-distant future?
So, to the teams that are likely thinking of buying in an effort to make the post-season (that’s you, Capitals, Sabres, Bruins, Rangers, Thrashers, Panthers, Islanders, Flames, Predators, Avalanche, Canucks, Blue Jackets, Coyotes and Blues):
Don’t do it. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is your year. Build for the future and, on Feb. 26, sell, sell, sell.

Problem:
Having a stronger team in the future is far from guaranteed, even with a large pile of picks and prospects, unless a team is consistently well-managed already - and if it is, they are probably contending without selling everyhting.
And how does management justify such a decision to the fans if they really want to make the playoffs (or if, in smaller markets, the team’s future may depend on it to stir up excitement). It’s one thing to not benefit financially from a couple of playoff games - it’s another thing to make the fans cranky because they have waited long enough, management isn’t doing “enough to win,” they will never spend the money anyway, and why even bother renewing season tickets when the prices are going up and they don’t want to try for the playoffs where “anything can happen”?
The goal of the teams isn’t to make trades just to give the media something to talk about. That’s what rumors are for!
