from Philly Burbs,
Coach John Stevens was still somewhat annoyed by Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien’s post-game comments suggesting the Flyers ran up the score (by using their first power play unit) and resorted to rough-house tactics.
It should be noted the Penguins scored eight goals twice against the Flyers last season and finished 8-0-0 against them.
“When you [Pittsburgh] take running head shots at guys, breaking sticks [over bodies] away from the play and running your goalie ... I would be disrespectful if I didn’t put those guys out there,” Stevens said. “I have a lot of respect for the Penguins, but not for what he had his players do. If you’re going to take those kinds of penalties against us, why wouldn’t we try to score?”

Having watched that game, I can tell you that the Penguins were taken advantage of and screwed over in about every way imaginable. The refs turned a blind eye to nearly every Flyer offense, and yet dinged the Pens for every infraction they could.
The Flyers were skating around throwing elbows and fists, and charging players, and the refs refused to do a single thing about it so the Penguins did what they had to in response.
This type of officiating is a joke. Thew only interest the refs seemed to have in protecting the Penguins was towards the end of the game, when they quite literally would surround Crosby after every play to keep him from getting into a fight out of fear that he’d get hurt. Otherwise, they did NOTHING for the Pens.
I’m not saying the Pens didn’t play poorly (they did) but… my god. How much of a leash do the Flyers get? It’s quite clear they were out there trying to hurt Penguin players for at least half of the game.
Had the Flyers not been playing so dirty, the running up of the score wouldn’t have seemed like such a big deal. But when you’re already exhibiting a lack of class before running the score up…
