Stick To The Program

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

It can’t be the city that keeps people with the Wings, and it’s certainly not aging Joe Louis Arena. The Wings also don’t wildly overpay individual players or executives or coaches.

“We sell a culture, a little bit,” said Holland yesterday. “It’s not for everybody. I would say life isn’t all about money and if every decision you make is about money, then probably Detroit isn’t for you.

“But people like to be a part of winning. It’s a hard thing to leave.”

I’d like to draw attention to a specific portion of this article:

The marvellous Red Wings, up 3-0 on the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference final, are on the verge of making their fourth Stanley Cup final appearance in 13 years, a period of time in which they’ve never missed the playoffs, lost in the first round only three times and won three Cups.

Funny how quickly things change in the eyes of the MSM.

It would be the fifth SCF appearance in 13 seasons.

(secret word is 95yes...kind of ominous)

The Maple Leafs...decided not to pursue Bowman last summer when he was interested in coming aboard.

Hmmm. I don’t recall that it was Scotty who was interested in the Leafs. My recollection is that it was exactly the opposite. Or am I recalling this wrong?

Once it became clear that the Leafs weren’t going to get Scotty, it came out (I think it was from CBC) that he was interested, but only if he could have complete control over hockey operations.  MLSE wasn’t willing to give that...pretty terrifying thought for their next GM, isn’t it?

I think the interest was mutual, but Ryan is right - it hinged on having complete control.  Also it was difficult to deal with the front office in Toronto because it was impossible to talk to one person and get a decision, and several factions were moving at cross-purposes throughout.

Okay, thanks, Ryan and Ms. B. Guess I was under the impression at the time that anyone as smart as Scotty wouldn’t even think about taking a job with the Laffs.
