via Darren Dreger of TSN,
The threat of retirement is not standing in the way of NHL teams taking a hard run at free agent forward Mats Sundin.
Sources tell TSN as many as four teams have tablde offers for the 37 year old, including one undisclosed team that has offered a whopping $10 million per year on a multi-year contract.
Update 2:33pm ET: Which team offered $20 million for 2 years to Sundin? The Canucks, so sayeth the rumor guys.

Nobody else overpays like the Rangers but my goodness, $10M? I hope that doesn’t actually happen.

Seems silly that Crosby makes what, 8.7? And someone is potentially offering 10 to a guy that is, certainly still a great player, but out of his prime?

While this would obvioulsy be a shock to most, and seems like too much money, if you step back and look at what type of player Mats Sundin is, and what he brings to a team, and in the right situation, he is the final piece to someone’s puzzle. He joins a long list of good players (Sunding being the best) who have not been appreciated in Toronto. The surround him with nothing but fluff...3rd and 4th liners, giving him barely 20 minutes of ice a night, and then compare his output to the likes of Sakic, Yzerman, and others big point produceing captains around the league. All the while, he keeps playing, performing, putting up a point a game pace the whole time in Toronto. Dealing with the media circus, the ridiculous fans, and incompetent ownership. He stays for less money, and we question his allegiance, he doesn’t want to be traded out of town at the deadline, and we question is loyalty...the saddest part of this whole sordid affair is...that he will now be remebered as a traitor, as a selfish pro athelete, when in fact the only part of that, that is true is....PRO! I will miss Mats Sundin, a class act all the way...good luck with your new team...Cheers!

“he is the final piece to someone’s puzzle”
Maybe but you can’t deny that $10M is an overpayment no matter how fond you are of Sundin.

Does Vancouver even have that much cap space?

good post, Puck, i’m sure there’s a lot of fans who agree with you but the few who don’t will be the most vocal.

come on glen, do the deal, put all your money in guy who has hip problems and a team that has a bad defense.

My question is would you rather pay Mats 10 million for 2 years, if you are making a run...(because as we are seeing, with the cap, you can’t keep a team together, so you have to go for it, when you feel you have what it takes)...Or Chris Drury for 6 years? or even Gomez, for 8? We can agree to disagree, and while I would agree $10 Million is too much, but compared to some of the other ridiculous deals handed out last season, spending on Sundin, (who contrary to popular opinion, is still playing at the top of his game) is not a bad thing or a gamble at either. This guy has proven year after year, that he can be counted on, and he is more resilient than most when it comes to staying healthy, and even returning early when he has been injured. I realize, its easy to crap all over the LEafs, but the fact is, you can’t crap on Sundin for being a great player, who was put in a poor environment. There are so called Leafs fans, that blame him for the ineptitude of the organization, and their inability to win a cup for 41 years??? Some players are freaks of nature, and can continue playing at a high level into their late 30’s and early 40’s. If you surround this guy with skill, and true talent, like..um...I don’t know...some wingers that can acutally score when he sets them up with open nets...he will shine, and play even better, bank on it!!!
