“Sweat”-er Talk

from the Calgary Sun,

Having now sampled the new, high-tech togs unveiled by all 30 NHL teams this year for a handful of pre-season games, Flames players are understanding why the word sweat is in sweater.

“My undershirt is just soaked,” said forward Owen Nolan. “I find I’m changing them in between periods and a lot more frequently than before. I feel like I’m working out in a sauna.”...

“With the other ones, you had holes and got more of a breeze in there—maybe that’s why you got that drying out effect,” said blueliner Cory Sarich. “These seem to heat you up more because there’s not that two-way air flow.

“Besides, the jerseys don’t feel much different than the old ones. I don’t know if they’ve accomplished what they want. From talking to guys, I don’t feel they’re making a difference on the ice.”

Didn’t the NHL fully test these sweaters…oh, never mind, that’s right, it was more important to get expensive new sweaters out there for fans to buy.

I think thye only tested them for the moisture-repellent properties they were touting, though.  I know some of the testing was done on treadmills to see how well they did in retaining or not body heat, but I doubt if any testing was actually done with gloves and skates.  I mean, they weren’t redesigning gloves and skates, were they?

Money, money, money!  I have more to say about it at my blog.  Seriously, why a jersey change now?  Oh wait, the NHL isn’t expanding this year so bring in more revenue.  The unbalanced schedule is taking a hike (or so I think I read) so travel will be costing more.  Ahh… we need a quick fix.  New jerseys!  That’s it.  And we’ll tell everyone that breathe better (they don’t - they’re tighter) and that they pull the sweat off of players (they really don’t do this - just read the article) and if they don’t believe that, we’ll go one step further and tell them that they make the players 8% faster… LOL!  What we won’t tell them, is that these things stretch and rip easier than the old uniforms.  Now, if you get into a fight, you can rip the jersey of off your opponent and free swing and cause more injuries.  What we won’t advertise (too loudly) is that an authentic costs $300 to $350… a fakie costs $100.  Revenue means less money in your pockets, more money in the owners’ pockets, and Uncle Gary staying his coush leather seat on Fifth Av.
