Thanx bsalamon.
Great job by Wolmer Edqvist.
Also, I hope for a fast and full recovery for Niklas Lihagen.

He is a hero indeed. This reminds me of the tragic collapse of Jiri Fischer on the bench a few years ago. I’m wishing him a full recovery and some peace of mind to his family, loved ones and teammates.

I think all refs should have to know cpr, or at least have one on hand that knows it. You never know when something like this can happen. Yea the big clubs have trainers and usually medical personnel are on hand but having someone else out there knowing this doesn’t hurt. When I played high school hockey, rarely we had a trainer, and there was no ambulance there. I know it but the only reason i do is my boss had to send some of us to get it so we had one on each crew per OSHA. And it really doesn’t hurt to know how to do this. I thought I was going to have to do it this hunting season.

I find it very telling in the comments to the English article that someone points out that team doctors were there, and yet it was the ref who stepped in and administered CPR.
In this case, the ref just happened to be a trained EMT. They were very fortunate apparently, because it sure doesn’t look like, to me in the video, that the team “doctors” were very proactive.
Kudos to the ref though, definitely.
Teams really need to re-evaluate what their “doctors” can and can’t do, and make sure they’re prepared for these sorts of things. Clearly in this case the team doctor was not properly prepared… the player’s lucky that particular ref was there.

Re: the Doctors inactivity
From what I remember about CPR, the person who starts it, should be the one to do it. The ref was in a better position to start CPR as opposed to the doctors who were probably on the bench. Granted it may only be a few seconds, but having people who are trained emt’s at the ready is a necessity.

An EMT might actually have more CPR training/experience than an MD, strange as that may seem…
