Sydor in Tonight

From Helene St. James at the Detroit Free Press,

Quick update from Mellon Arena here in Pittsburgh: In an effort to stop a two-game losing streak, the Penguins are inserting 36-year-old defenseman Darryl Sydor into the lineup for Game 3.

Sydor won Stanley Cups in 1999 with Dallas and in Tampa Bay 2004, but hasn’t seen action in a single game in the 2008 playoffs, that’s how highly the Penguins have thought of him. So exactly what he can add now is going to be interesting to see.

Update 12:37pm ET: From the CP,

The 36-year-old will replace rookie Kristopher Letang, whose play has slipped of late. Sydor has yet to see any action in this year’s playoffs.

First Roberts, now Sydor. He’s pulling out all the coaching stops.
Anyone seen Barrasso or Wreggett hanging around the rink?

No. But Super Mario was at both games. Maybe his unforgiveable silence (at least to Scott Burnside) is because he’s contemplating another comeback. If so, he better watch out for Kronner!

LOL

Therrien is an idiot.  I forgot the Pens had Sydor until it was mentioned after Game 1 that putting him in might be a good idea...you think!?

Therrien left a two time stanley cup champ sitting on the bench!?  He honestly thought that was a good idea, you know, given how immensely talented his blue line is!?

You have got to be kidding me.  The best thing the Pens could do in the off-season is fire Therrien, hire Joel Quenneville, let some fire-power go up front, and sign a real defenseman.  Oh, and commit to playing Darryl Sydor more next season.  I swear to God…

I could’ve sworn that I read the issue with Sydor was that he is a turnover machine and played poorly most of the season.

I don’t want to say it reeks of desperation but…

This Therrien is a real dimwit. Although the GM that thought Hal Gill was a top 3 defenseman ain’t all that bright either. The Pens D is so mediocre that even if they could score (which they can’t) Detroit would just crank up the offense and really blow them out. They are lucky they are only getting beat 3-0 in my opinion. The Wings are being merciful to them. The West plays a much tougher brand of hockey.

HockeyJoe - I’ll say it then.

DESPERATION.

Desperation is why Roberts is in, and why Sydor is in.  And why Laracque will end up back in at some point as well.  The Pens are desperate.

In the East, you can get by with one really good defenseman (Chara in BOS, Gonchar in PIT this year, Timonen in PHI, Redden in OTT, Green in WAS).

In the West, you need 2, or maybe even 3 (Lidstrom-Rafalski, Pronger-Niedermayer, Zubov-Boucher, Phaneuf-Regehr.  In the West if you only have 1 (Foote in COL, Keith in CHI, Campbell in SJ) it’s very difficult to survive and excel.

The Pens are finding this out the hard way, and I’m not sure any lineup change they could come up with can save them, because they just don’t have the defensive personnel to match up.
