from John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal,
The hockey blog-heads can be witty, irreverent, knowledgable and a much-needed prod in the ribs to mainstream media. But that’s during the roughly 10-month season. When blog items sorting out the nuances of the Marty Reasoner signing in Atlanta show up in deepest July, well, it’s time for William Shatner to reprise the “Get a life” pep talk he satirically delivered to those tediously committed Trekkies in a Saturday Night Live sketch about 15 years ago.
“It’s the middle of July, for crying out loud,” I can hear Shatner intoning. “What have you done with yourselves?”
This off-season talent churn is meant to be one of the real beauties of the New NHL, of course, a way to remake a failing roster into a Stanley Cup contender in a hurry.
I read the article, but I’m not sure what it’s really about. He scolds (or, less generously, mocks) hockey fans for being interested in hockey during the off-season, but applauds Tampa’s new owners for building a buzz around the team during that same off-season. He praises the summertime whirlpool of trades and free-agent signings, but bemoans the resulting constant stream of news.
Is “sorting out the nuances of the Marty Reasoner signing in Atlanta” less news-worthy than a meaningless fluff piece that’s written just to meet a journalist’s quota?
