from Darren Dreger of TSN,
While it’s possible Scott Niedermayer will make a decision on his playing future either today or tomorrow, the Anaheim Ducks aren’t pressuring him to do so.
Ducks general manager Brian Burke called Niedermayer on Wednesday to tell him Friday wasn’t a deadline established by the Ducks, adding the real deadline for the team is July 1.

Logical - their draft needs aren’t affected by whether they have a veteran defenseman back or not.
I’m puzzled as to why the team had to call him to let him know when the “deadline” was, though - hadn’t they discussed this earlier in the offseason? They’ve had plenty of time to determine when the team expected his answer, so there shouldn’t be any misunderstanding by now.

Huh.
Scott will be back playing next year. Probably by about January.

I read earlier that Burke had given Niedermayer a deadline of Friday (or maybe I heard Burke say it on NHL Live the other day). I think the logic of wanting to know before the draft would be that if they need to move a player (or players) in order to keep Niedermayer and Corey Perry, it might be more convenient to do so for a pick (or picks) than ending up dumping guys for less than equal value like they had to last season (e.g., Bryzgalov and MacDonald).

Ah, that makes some sense. A moving deadline, then.
