Talbot Targeted Datsyuk

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
The last time a Canadian player slashed a Russian player in an attempt to break an ankle was 1972. Everyone thought it was great then, but somehow I think the Red Wings are not going to think too highly of the Max Talbot slash on Pavel Datsyuk in Game 5.
Was it a ridiculously vicious chop? No. Was it a targeting of an injured player? Absolutely. And some people might suggest that’s what the Stanley Cup playoffs are all about but I’m sure the Red Wings would say otherwise as they don’t embrace that whole concept of vigilante justice very much. Their idea of getting back at the opposition is to do what they did in Game 5 – score lots of goals.
more on game 5…
added 7:48am, from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,
Talbot was called for slashing—and it certainly appeared he was trying to aggravate Datsyuk’s bad foot. Talbot knows that critics probably will suggest his intentions were bad.
“They can suggest whatever they want. I went for the puck and his foot was there,” Talbot said.

Talbot added, “It’s his fault. In those black boots, his feet look just like pucks.”

May as well take advantage of the few opportunites he has left. Season is almost over and there are fewer opportunites to slash a guy’s ankle in golf, I suppose.

Whatever, this stuff happens all the time. I don’t really care, even as a Wings fan. I doubt it was that hard of a slash anyways. Probably just trying to get in Pav’s head, not actually cause damage.
I hate that kind of stuff. You finish a check or something like that it’s one thing, but to so blatantly try to injure a guy. You’d think Gary Bettman and all his “elevate the game from the goonish thuggery” clique would go nuts over something like this. I guess a team maintaining excellence over a long periods of time at the expense of the marketing plan is more of a black eye to the league than trying to dislodge a guys broken foot from his ankle.
If there’s really a problem with anything in last night’s game, it’s what could’ve easily been considered a butt-end to Franzen’s head by Malkin, and a clear instigator that was generously called a “roughing” penalty, on Kunitz.
See my point above. If they really cared about the game and not their hoped for outcome they would have handled the Malkin instigator thing in a way that wasn’t so transparent. I don’t think a guy should be suspended for what happened between Z and Malkin, but Campbell’s explanation 15 seconds after the game, as he explained why the rule didn’t apply, was goofy.

The classlessness of the Pens knows no boundaries.

I almost don’t blame the Pens, the Wings have a way of playing so damn well they drive teams to immaturity (see Calgary, Anaheim, and Chicago over the last three playoff seasons).
