via the Florida Panthers Blog at the Sun-Sentinel,
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Blackhawks have been invited to open the 2009-10 season in Prague, Czech Republic and that the Panthers will likely be the opponent.
Chicago team president John McDonough told the Tribune that Blackhawks had been extended an invitation, and added, “nothing has been finalized. We’ll know sometime in the near future.” The newspaper cited an unnamed source saying that Blackhawks’ opponent would be the Panthers.
Asked about the validity of the report this afternoon, Panthers team president Michael Yormark said, “No comment” through team spokesman Justin Copertino

Maybe Florida has a lot of Czechs on the roster? That would draw interest even if they aren’t the best hockey team.

Good point..Florida does have a couple of Czechs on their roster. But does a Czech or two on the roster really matter to fans? I mean when soccer teams from Europe come over here for a big US tour, they usually send such teams as Barcelona or Chelsea or Manchester U..popular and often pretty good teams. As a fan, I’d rather see a good team than some crappy team, no offense to the two or three Florida fans, that has a couple of players from my country. It just seems to me that if you match up two good teams, the league might get a bigger bang for its buck.

Come on now, why send Florida? If the “big picture” point of this is to expand the interest in the NHL game to Europeans, why send a team that doesn’t play hockey very well? The NFL did the same either last year or the year before when they sent a really crappy Miami team to London and I didn’t understand that either. There are plenty of other NHL teams that can actually play the game pretty well to choose from.
