Talking HNIC

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

Perhaps CBC’s tepid ratings until now stem from confusion over content. Hockey Night in Canada seems to believe the show is Don Cherry with a little hockey game on the side. A few deluded souls believe the players and game should take prominence over He Who Will Not be Ignored. Once again, Game 7 featured another homage à Cherry as he fished an octopus out of the Detroit River. This after the laboured Dos Equis beer spoof and a season of otherwise bowing and scraping to his schtick….

Hockey Night will also have to consider the polymorphous Ron MacLean, Cherry’s caddy. One minute he’s the crack reporter on The Hot Stove, all fedoras with the business card and a pencil behind the ear. Then he’s the frozen Deepak Chopra, spouting homilies about Pittsburgh’s rookie head coach Dan Bylsma, “He learned there was a busload of adversity and a flight of opportunity along the way.”

The next moment he’s the unabashed fan, gushing over the players on the ice Friday night.

He hit the nail on the head, having watched HNIC for 40 years, it has become almost unbearable in its current form.  I know many of you genuflect to the great white north on all things hockey, but a little comparison between NBC and CBC shows why NBC got nearly 10 million viewers during game 7.

Head to head NBC announcers out perform their counterparts on CBC.

Hughson VS Emerick: DRAW:  both are very good, Emerick is a hall of famer, Hughson will be one.

Simpson VS Eddie O: NBC: Simpson who? this guy is one of the worst color commentators in the league,  Eddie is too verbal but at least he has a personality.

Pierre VS Scott O: NBC: Love him or hate him he adds excitement and between the glass is a great concept. Don’t even mention Marc Crawford, screeching and cackling.

Cherry VS Milbury: Draw: A senile Xenophobe vs an idiot. Bad choices all around

Between Periods: NBC: Pang, Pierre and yes Milbury are still better than Cherry, the two boobs in the glass box update room, the other update boob with ADHD, Al F&ckhead;Strachan, Kelly (lost in the headlights) Hrudey and Ron (smarmy) McLean.

Add in some of the worst commercials in the Western Hemisphere on CBC and NBC wins 4-0-2. You may think this is heresy, but the sinking ship called HNIC isn’t the icon it once was.

Final nail in the coffin: They couldn’t even keep the theme song.

I don’t watch anyone’s intermission show, honestly - they are all pretty bad, most times.

I prefer CBC because of the actual game broadcast - NBC is horrible in its camera work, both following the play and showing the appropriate replays.  They were also very often behind in telling viewers why, when they came back from commercial, someone was in the penalty box.

(And whoever anyone puts “behind the glass” or “between the benches” or whatever they call it, I don’t like the concept if for no other reason it’s just another voice to ramble right over the play without adding anything of real value to the broadcast.  The fewer voices the better - too cluttered otherwise.)

And I actually like their new theme song.
