Talking Refs

from John Shannon of Sportsnet,
I don’t think I’m alone, but I do have a few concerns about officiating in the NHL. I certainly think (or maybe hope) that others inside the NHL have the same concerns. I am even more concerned about the future of the two-man refereeing system. Someone (read the league) has to invest in more two-man development in the minor leagues. On-the-job-training at this level is not satisfactory, there has to be more two-man officiating well before the young officials get to the NHL. I am also waiting for the announcement soon that Bill McCreary will be asked to delay his retirement for at least one more year.

The biggest problem at the minor league level is that AHL refs also work ECHL and IHL games.
This last fall I went to Kalamazoo to watch an ECHL game, then the next night was in Grand Rapids to watch the AHL Griffins play and the same clown was officiating (and poorly).
You simply can’t have these guys bouncing around working games in 2 or 3 different leagues. The IHL isn’t even in the NHL pipeline and has very different rules, for instance. I’m pretty sure some of them also call USHL games occasionally as well, which is once again very different.
You can’t put two-man ref teams in the minor league level because they barely have the ability to ice a single ref for most games anymore.

The only minor league arena I go to with any frequency is in Cleveland (AHL), and the officiating there is brutal. I’m often wondering what game the refs are watching. I’ve seen high school games officiated better. It’s an NHL sized ice surface in an 18,000 (and change) arena. It’s not the rink’s fault these refs suck.

The officiating in the AHL is often horrible and going into a game you even expect it to be horrible. A couple weeks ago the same ref on a Friday night let the players play the game rarely making any calls and on Sunday he called every little infraction. The rinks are often smaller and officials often get in the way and even with smaller rinks often miss calls.
