Teams Continue To Spend

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

In what should come as a surprise to no one, for the first time in history the NHL will spend in excess of $1.5 billion in salaries this season. And early indications are the average team payroll will go up by $5 million from 2007-08....

Spurned on by a summer of wild free agent spending and a number of big-money, long-term contracts beginning to kick in, the league is spending money like never before. As the NHL has always thought, the upper limit of the cap has turned out to be a magnet for spending, with 12 teams within $2 million of the cap.

Paul, you really need to call out the stupidity of these writers. The amount of money that is spent on salaries is directly tied to league revenues, which is not known until the end of the year.

It honestly amazes me how many articles make that mistake, bcrt.  I mean, we’ve had the current CBA for a while now, wouldn’t journalists start to catch on?  A bunch of writers are all over the details and have a real solid understanding of the changing realities in the NHL, but some of the other ones…

Maybe they have caught on but feel the need to write sensationalist articles.  Or maybe they think readers can’t understand the details (this happens a lot in journalism, in my experience).  Or maybe some journalists are just used to passing on their received wisdom without having to apply any critical thinking or research.
