Teams Will Face The Smyth Decision

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

“Unfortunately for Kevin Lowe, he had to do something we’re all going to have to do. He just had to do it first,” said the Minnesota Wild general manager.
“Because of the salary cap and players hitting unrestricted free agency earlier, every last general manager in the NHL is going to have to do the exact same thing Kevin had to do with Ryan Smyth.
“Fortunately for the rest of us, we weren’t the one who had to be the first one to do it and suffer through it.”

So, uh, they think that the Oilers are the first team to have to trade a guy who was going to leave via free agency because they couldn’t get a deal done?

Was Smyth even the first one THAT DAY moved for that reason?

It’ll be a long while before Kevy shows his face in Rexall Place, I’m sure of it.  He’s not the most popular man on the block right now.  For whatever reasons they let Smyth go, fans are still angry.  But I wonder why Ryan didn’t buck up and accept the deal for 5% less than what he was asking.  Perhaps Kev is taking on more heat than he should be.

In one of the articles I read it was mentioned Smyth was asked about the $100,000 difference between what he wanted and what they were asking. He said there was more to it than that.

Take it for what it’s worth.
