Ted Takes on the Ovechkin Rumors

From Ted Leonsis of the Washington Capitals,

No mention of our team can pass, it seems, without noting Alex Ovechkin’s contract status, and I can tell from postings in the blogosphere and message boards that this has a lot of fans worried. I respect Alex and George McPhee’s commitment to keep the negotiations out of the media and frankly have wondered who is making up some of the things I have read. As I have stated on numerous occasions, we couldn’t be more impressed with Alex as a player and a person and we expect him to be in D.C. for a long, long time.

I don’t have much to add, but want to say this: We love Alex Ovechkin.

lots more… on the Caps, from prospects to television revenues to logos

Update 4pm ET: Yesterday, Leonsis discussed this same issue on XM Radio. Interview mp3 can be downloaded here.

The Caps can match any offer another team makes for Ovechkin, if it gets that far.

Ir AO says he won’t play, then the Caps can suspend him, etc…

Basically, Ovechkin has no say where he ends up, all up to the Caps.

Paul,
Thanks a lot for reply, but if Caps and Ovechkin are in contract impasse and there were no offers to match… then what? The contract doesn’t exist. He can’t play if he the contract doesn’t exist. What’s next? Can Caps force to sign him any kind of contract or it goes to arbitration?

I see where you are coming from PG.  No, the player is not eligible for arbitration.  He either accepts the offer from his original team, or says no and waits for the offer sheets to roll in.
Then of course, his current team can match any offer or let him go for compensation depending on the size of the contract.
So, what AO is probably doing is waiting for the right offer to come from the Caps, the longer he waits, the more he may make.
But in the end, the Caps hold the hammer.

Thanks, Paul…

So if Caps offered him less than Crosby, say, 7.5 mil and Kevin Lowe or anybody else won’t bite this summer, Ovechkin will have to accept 7.5 mil, correct?

What if he is ‘insulted’, can he demand a trade? If so, before or after signing?

If he doesn’t accept the offer PG, then yes he would have to sign the offer from the Caps if he wants to play, but I don’t see that happening.  Some team will make a huge offer, but then again, AO would be rolling the dice, because who knows which team will make that offer?
My belief is AO has a $$$ figure in mind, if the Caps hit that number, he will sign, if not, look out, it could be a crazy summer.
