Teflon Don Waddell

From Jeff Schultz at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
And then there’s the Teflon Don.
“I put myself in good company,” he said, managing a smile.
He’s employed. He’s fortunate. He knows that.
More than likely, if he worked in a bigger hockey market and for owners who cared about the sport and maybe something other than the next court hearing, he’d be out of work. So you could say heading an after-thought of a franchise has its benefits.
But I had to ask: Aren’t you surprised you still have a job?
“Not at all,” he said. “We’ve had to deal with a lot of adversity here . . .”

Let me see..bad drafts, bad trades, bad personnel judgments, multiple missteps in organizational planning, lackadaisical ownership, one gm..sounds a little like the Matt Millen effect to me. Whats really sad is that Atlanta metro has nearly 5.8 million people. That is a lot of future fans the nhl could win if the owners could find the stones to get a good gm in there.

A lot of transplants too. I went to the game at Philips Arena in March between the Wings and Thrashers and I couldn’t believe how much red was in the crowd. These are people with kids, who if they had a somewhat competent team to root for, COULD become Thrashers fans.

We finally have a coach we like. Some good young players to build around. Kovalchuk is Captain. A strong 2nd half after a miserable start.
There are less cries for Waddell’s head than ever before. This ship has seemingly been righted and it’s not the time to throw out the man who helped right it.
Considering everything, it really will come down to Kovalchuk re-signing or not that will determine whether Waddell has a job as the Thrashers GM for the 2010 season.

The poor beleaguered Thrashers fans. It’s remarkable any of them are sticking it out yet, few as they are. :(
