Ten Reasons Why Avery Should Not Be A Member Of The New York Rangers

from Mark Hermann of Newsday,

There are very good reasons why Rangers fans are so hot to get Sean Avery back.

One is he has a rare combination of skills: He is a world-class provocateur and he also is, as coach Tom Renney used to say during Avery’s time with the Rangers, a good hockey player.

Two, he was effective, especially when he first came to New York from the Los Angeles Kings in February, 2007....

Not to be spoilsport, but there are more and better reasons why the Rangers shouldn’t come within 100 miles of him…

• His reputation is radioactive now. No flying under the radar to get under opponents’ skin in the crease. He would be the big Rangers story every day. At every stop, people would clamor to get a few words from him, hoping to hear him say something outrageous.

Even if he passed/failed his anger management classes in the way hockey players should, cleaned up his act, and looked like gold again, there will not be a team out there willing to touch him until his ludicrous contract is bought out. Not a single one.

A team that could use Avery’s agitation needs to make sure FIRST that there is an Alpha Male in the dressing room to keep him in line - one who’s not afraid to get in Avery’s face to tell him off and have the sensibilities and tact to keep it in the dressing room.  That’s why he wasn’t as loose a cannon as he was in Detroit because he had Yzerman, Shanahan, and Lidstrom to keep him straight.  He was still his goofy self but not to the level that he recently put himself in.

It reminds me of Dennis Rodman with the Pistons, actually.  He was crazy, but not flat-out insane when Thomas, Dumars, Lambier et al were around to keep him in check somewhat.  Without a check he alsw was an extremely loose cannon.
