Testing Virtual Ads

In one of its boldest moves yet to build corporate support around its television broadcasts, the NHL will test virtual advertising for the first time during the Stanley Cup playoff broadcasts on its national TV partners.
In another first, the league also will put postseason logos on the ice during the playoffs.
The virtual advertising plan, which still has to be approved by Commissioner Gary Bettman and team owners, is patterned after the same type of advertising behind home plate during televised baseball games.
Hockey’s version will superimpose ads on the glass above dasherboards that protect spectators. The ads, which will not be visible in the arena, will not affect camera angles or live TV shots.
Neither the league nor the networks have pitched the new inventory to ad buyers yet, but they plan to test the concept during this year’s postseason, which begins next week. If everything goes well, NBC, Versus and regional sports networks will use virtual ads for their telecasts next season.

MSG did this during the playoffs last year. Little to no effect on the game. Trust me, it won’t distract you unless you let it distract you.

I’m pretty adept at ignoring advertising everywhere else, so I don’t see this as any different.
It’s gotten to the point that the only ads I remember anymore are the most annoying ones, and then I make a point of not buying that product under any circumstances, anyway.

Well, if it blocks me from seeing the morons who sit in the front row and constantly wave at the camera as the action passes by, I’m all for it.

Why not just put the advertisement directly on the backs of the lower bowl seats at the ACC since they are always empty when the period starts? Sorry, I missed the part about this being used for the playoffs.

It’s funny, you watch World Juniors and there is ads all over the place. Overkill in my mind.
Helmets, socks, jerseys etc. There is usually even a SKODA car parked in the stands all lit up.
Some more ads would be ok I suppose..... just overdo it!

Too many ads already. If I was an advertiser I wouldn’t even consider this - the signal-noise ratio is far too high. It’s just visual pollution.
