The $2 Billion Question

From Mark Herrmann at Newsday,
Far be it from me to tell anyone how to spend their $2 billion. So don’t look here for a quick yea or nay on the sweeping plan to completely redo Nassau Coliseum and develop the 77 acres around it.
What we can help with is to see the question behind the question, which is a biggie: Is Long Island the right place for a major-league sports team?
That is the $2-billion stumper we have to answer because a project such as the village proposed by Islanders owner Charles Wang and Scott Rechler is the cost of doing business in the big leagues these days.

I think he makes a good point that the area of land is going to be developed anyway. It isn’t as though the Islanders organization it talking about plopping an arena in the middle of nowhere.

Since Mark Hermann writes for Newsday I guess he does visit Long Island at least once in a while although it takes him to come around to the point that this isn’t a bad idea. What LI doesn’t need is another strip mall that would replace the Coliseum if the Islanders were to move out. With Hofstra University just across the street and 16,000 attending games there is certainly the market for a true sports and entertainment complex.
I’m not in favor of public funds being used to subsidize private sports organizations, but Long Island isn’t doing itself any favors by turning the area into a wasteland of a parking lots instead of the Lighthouse project. The Coliseum and environs could have been generating revenue for the past 20 years while the politicians were raising taxes and figuring out who was going to get the kick backs for developing this site instead.
