The Ball Is In The Islanders Court

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Today’s calendar reads Dec. 1, 2010, but a Long Island, N.Y., based hockey writer by the name of Chris Botta has effectively, and apparently legally in the NHL, been banned by the New York Islanders from attending Islander games and practices at the Nassau Coliseum.

Really? Seriously? We’re going there? Again?

You’ve got to be kidding.

Admittedly, the Botta-Islander situation is unique in the annals of pro sports media relations gone wrong.

More from that article including this little gem:

There was the infamous night when a Ballard-banned Globe and Mail reporter, flanked by his hockey writing brethern, stormed the Maple Leaf dressing room after a game. As the persona non grata reporter was given the bum’s rush out of the room by security, Ballard was right there waving his cane at him and bellowing something to the effect of, “Your mother should have smothered you at birth, you four-eyed (expletive deleted).”

I can’t even begin to make sense of the huge mess that is now the Islanders.  I’ve admired the Isles in the Eighties with Potvin, Bossy, and Smith.

Un-frigging-believable…

This is a story I’m admittedly sick and tired of hearing about.

Botta made his point (one i even agree with), now he needs to put it to rest.

This isn’t Botta’s writing.

It’s nice to see people other than Botta calling the Islanders organization (if you can call it that) out on these shenanigans. McKenzie has a point and is respected widely enough that people in high places might actually pay attention. I’m glad TSN picked it up. I do, however, think the ball will remain in the Islanders’ court unless they are somehow forced to play it. Garth Snow and Charles Wang are definitely two of the most stubborn people in the league, possibly approaching sutter-level pigheadedness.

I realize that, since it’s not his byline.  I can read, I’m not a Habs fan…

He’s done nothing to come out and say “Enough”.  Quite frankly the longer this goes on, the less and less sympathy I’m feeling for Botta.  It really is playing out more as just sour grapes from a guy who was given a unique opportunity.
