The Battles- Washington vs. Nashville

fromn John Glennon of the Tennessean,

There were a couple of hard-hitting bouts in the opening period, with the Predators coming out on top in both. Wade Belak buckled Donald Brashear with a straight left and dropped him to the ice, while Jordin Tootoo turned Matt Bradley’s face into a bloody mess — cutting Bradley’s nose badly and giving him a black eye to boot.

“We have guys that can battle each and every night and that’s part of our team,’’ Tootoo said. “We play physical and bring it all.’’

Brashear didn’t return after the fight and might have sprained a knee when he fell to the ice.

more on the Preds including some Radulov talk…

I really like the shot of the 8 year old kid that’s totally psyched after the Tootoo/Bradley fight.

I’ve never been one to take the “no fighting” side of the argument, and still won’t, but when you see a kid that age with that bloodlust at a hockey game, it’s hard not to at least see where the other side is coming from… alas, it’s not the NHL’s job to take care of it, it’s the parents’ job.

Washington took a beat down last night.

If Brashear is loosing fights now, what is the point of dressing him?

Brashear lost A fight.  Other tough guys lose far more than he does.  I doubt that is reason enough to sit him down.  Give me a break.  That, by the way, was the first time Brashear was dropped in his ENTIRE NHL career.  He was dropped once in Juniors by Chris Simon… that’s it.  Amazing.

Beyond those two fights, the Caps actually did more damage to the Preds last night… as a result of some BIG hits.  Jason Arnott didn’t return and Mike Green and Shoane Morrisson both laid out a couple of Predators each.

So there are ways to hurt guys beyond fights.  Believe it or not, clean hits do the trick too.  That is why this GM talk about guys fighting after a clean hit is nonsense.  Clean hits can be BRUTAL.

Too bad someone didn’t YouTube the Caps “doing more damage to the Preds last night”.  Not as entertaining I guess.

I wonder if any of the NHL GM’s and Bettman saw the approval the fans gaved all to all those fights.

Ever see a kid playing a video game? How about the in-game reactions of a pewee football game? How about a Yankee/Redsox game from the stands, a european football match or just about any pro or college football game where a dad and son get into the game from the privacy of their own couch. “Bloodlust” is part of competition and its part of being a fan no matter how old you are. The issue of fighting or not fighting is irrelevant as that feeling, that emotion will always be there.
