The Biting Debate

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,
Replays clearly showed Peters yelling, “he [bleeping] bit me” and the action was frozen on the arena’s HD board as Ruutu sank his teeth on to Peters’ thumb and ripped off the glove.
“I’ve never experienced that before,” said a stunned Peters, whose broken skin was bandaged but not stitched afterward. “I’ve been involved in a few altercations, too. I’ve never had anyone bite me before. I didn’t know that even happened for real. I saw the replay of it and it’s pretty evident he did bite me....
Facing several different media inquiries, Ruutu repeatedly proclaimed his innocence against the overwhelming video evidence.
“I didn’t bite him,” Ruutu said. “He had his glove in my mouth but I didn’t bite him.”
more and if you missed the video from last night, here it is.
added 10:11am, ESPN zoomed in on the bite, watch below…

I like how more people freak out about Sidney Crosby getting in a fight than they do about Jarkko Ruutu biting someone. It proves that its more about the person and less about what they actually do that get people fired up.
In other words, everyone who was calling for Crosby to be banned for life if an idiot.

People were calling for Crosby to be banned for life?
Exaggerate much?

Exaggeration doesn’t make my point invalid.

This whole thing is a friggin’ joke. I don’t really care if there was a bite or not.
If you base your entire career on giving people face washes, something like this is bound to happen eventually. The flip side is that you could seriously damage somebody’s eye.
You had a hockey glove on, Peters! Grow a friggin’ sack.

Well I guess I don’t see your point.
Maybe you think the media was going crazy over Sid’s fight the other day, but it wasn’t big news outside of Pittsburgh. It was a bit of a conversation-piece in that the other guy apparently didn’t know that they were “going to go”, but that’s about it. Most hockey fans realize that Sid was trying desperately to rally a team on a losing streak, end of story.
The Kid didn’t draw any attention from Bettman. Ruutu will likely be fined and suspended.

I don’t know that anyone would deny that… yeah, a lot of us think Crosby is a real douche canoe, as such, we love to make fun of him every chance we get.
Ruutu is an irrelevant player. He’s a good agitator but he’s not carrying a club or acting as the face of the entire league—heck, entire sport. So yeah, Ruutu can bite a guy’s finger and not as many people care because the fact is that he is a speck of crap residue on the hairy ass that is the history of the NHL. Crosby’s kinda like the huge turd on its way out, so we take notice.

“I’ve been involved in a few altercations, too. I’ve never had anyone bite me before.”
Sure, but in how many of those altercations did you try to jam your fingers in the guy’s mouth?
Because that number is, it is the exact same number of times you SHOULD’VE been bitten.

I suppose you don’t read Kuklas Korner too often do you?
Every dumbass on here came out of their dark corner to talk about how Sid should be suspended blah blah, sids a dirty player blah blah, but when something real, something that actually deserves a bit of attention, you get like 2 people commenting.

Do I think Ruutu bit him? Yes.
Was the video proof-positive? No. It certainly seemed like something happend, but you can’t tell without a doubt.
Will Ruutu be suspended? Probably, but I don’t feel he should be since the video doesn’t erase all doubt.
Did Peters deserve it? Maybe not in this instance. But if you’re going to keep playing with fire, or in this case stick your smelly gloves in people eyes/mouths, you’re bound to get burned sooner or later.

Yeah, I understand what you’re saying Kevin, though there are a number of Ruutu comments on several threads here and this is something that has gained widespread coverage, beyond simply hockey media.
Without a doubt there are many Sid-haters and they tend to go off.... kind of like the Flyer fans behind me at the Kings-Flyer game the other day, as soon as they put the Penguins update on the screen. I can see how, as a Penguin fan, it must be annoying to have a star player constantly attacked on the interwebz etc…
Sid is a hell of a player. He just has that complaining look that rubs people the wrong way I guess.

Oh, and I kinda got off topic, but back to the main point of this post, ruutu biting peters.
Peters seriously has no balls. He was like jumping around crying. Seriously dude, grow a pair.

How is the video evidence “overwhelming”? It’s unlikely - but still quite possible - that Peters was just selling it when he realized his glove was in Ruutu’s mouth.
I mean, I’m a whole lot more likely to believe Peters here, but the video wasn’t conclusive enough to call it “overwhelming”.
