Dead Money Walking. Welcome to the world of paying players NOT to play in the NHL. And the lingering effects of their buyouts against the salary caps for teams such as the Flames.
To find a willing buyer for the contracts of Rhett Warrener, Marcus Nilson and Anders Eriksson, the Flames put them on waivers Thursday, the first step to buying out one, two or all three of them on their contracts. Rather than subject you to NHL algebra, here’s the skinny on buyouts: the Flames will assume approximately $3.3 million in dead salary-cap space if all three are bought out—or about $1.65 million per year for the next two years
