The Eastern Outlook

from the Montreal Gazette,

With National Hockey League teams opening training camp this week, here’s a look at how the Eastern Conference teams stack up.

Buffalo Sabres

Stories to watch: Buffalo seemingly keeps losing players and not replacing them. Last summer, Daniel Brière and Chris Drury bolted. They shipped Brian Campbell out at the trade deadline for Steve Bernier. Bernier was traded to the Canucks for a pair of draft picks this summer. ... Will fans continue to flock to the HSBC Arena given the team’s propensity for dumping high-priced talent?

Who is the moron that wrote this crap about Buffalo?

The Sabres continue to let high-priced players go? Let’s see: long-term deals for Ryan Miller, Derek Roy, Paul Gaustad, Thomas Vanek (yes, via offer sheet, but they still matched it), and in the process of inking Jason Pominville to a long-term deal.

We all know that Campbell isn’t worth what he received. And that player we received for him (in addition to a 1st rounder) - Steve Bernier? We didn’t just trade him for a pair of draft picks. That pair of draft picks basically became Craig Rivet. At the time of the trade: Bernier - roughly 800K, Rivet - 3.5 million. Really cutting payroll there.

I am so sick of (mostly) Canadian “journalists” continuing the myth of the cheap Sabres. And, unfortunately, Mr. Kukla has decided to make the the point he emphasizes on his front page just this. I’m disappointed.

And whatever will everyone do if the Sabres actually make the playoffs (which I believe they will - the veteran presence has been re-established, the defense has been stablized, and a real back-up has been added to give Miller a rest)? Or, God forbid, win the division? It reminds me a bit of 05-06, when everyone began the season spitting on Buffalo, only to realize later that they were a very good hockey team…
