The Flyers Philosophy By Bob Clarke

from Alan Bass of The Hockey News,
The Flyers have consistently been a tough team to play against throughout its history, owning the NHL’s second-best all-time winning percentage behind the Montreal Canadiens. Clarke attributes that to the tremendous support of owner Ed Snider.
“We were allowed to spend the money, we always tried to win,” Clarke said. “We didn’t do what Pittsburgh did; lose seven years in a row so they could get good. They did it twice, in fact. They went through six or seven different owners. We’ve had one owner.”
Clarke finds the strategies of some current teams appalling when considering the way other organizations have built competitive teams.
“It’s somewhat embarrassing that three of the last teams (in the 2009 playoffs) missed the playoffs six or seven years in a row; Washington, Chicago, and Pittsburgh,” he said. “Now they’re good and the teams that try to win all the time get penalized. Our philosophy has never changed since 1967.”
thanks to a KK reader for the pointer…

Pittsburgh never had deep pocket owners like Philly. Bobby Clarke was one of the worst GMs ever. He wasted more money than the Pens entire payroll before the cap. Pittsburgh did what it has to do so it could survive until the cap was put in place. Clarke is a dinosuar and his formula has never won Philly a cup

Clarke showing his frustration with the league and the direction its going. But i agree what he said. i think he’s trying to say that if the wasnt a cap, pittsburgh wouldnt of been in the position it was.

Hey dumbass, since the 91-92 season only 2 teams have made the playoffs more than the Penguins, the Wings and Devils. Pens missed the playoffs for 4 straight seasons, not six, not seven. Get over it. Thats what happens when the best player in the league retires and the second best cries about life and asks to be traded, while at the very same time contracts made up by an idiot GM can’t be paid and the team has financial troubles.
What’s more embarrassing, Mr. Clark, is that the only way your team can be competitive is if you have no salary restrictions and can buy a championship team. And even doing that, you haven’t won a cup since the 70’s.
Stay classy Philly.

I think someone is getting frustrated because their in-state rival has just been to back to back S.C. Finals and just won the Stanley Cup.
The Flyers are NOT being penalized!! Stop your crying and get with the program. This is 2009 not 1975.
Call the Wam-bulance, somebody’s sulking.

Yeah, Washington, Chicago and Pittsburgh all tanked and won the lottery with very good top draft picks. They also did what well run teams do and made good lower round draft picks, good trades and good free agent pickups.
Penguins:
Scuderi: 134th overall
Talbot: 234th overall
Guerin: Trade Deadline Aquisition
Orpik: 18th Overall
Hawks:
Havlat: Free Agency aquisition
Keith: 54th overall
Versteeg: Traded as a prospect from Boston
Sharp: Traded from Phily
Capitals
Green: 29th Overall
Varlamov: 23rd overal
OK, the caps don’t have a lot of talent that was drafted by them in the top half of the first round by them but I’d still rank last years Hawks and Penguins well above them, so my point stands.

another thing that Philly hasn’t done in the past few years - Beat the Penguins when it matters.

You wanna know their real problem? They draft awful players. Other than 1st round picks, they have no one even half good on their team who was drafted by them. As far as I can tell, they don’t have a single player who was drafted by the Flyers and is playing by the Flyers who wasn’t a 1st round pick.
Keep blaming the Penguins because your a joke franchise from a joke town.
0 Superbowls.
1 World Series.
2 Stanley cups since ‘67.
Way to go Philly.

gee maybe flyers should tank couple of season and see what it gets them. pens got successful because they tank season after season. pens have 4 #1 picks and 2 top 5 picks on their team.
i guess clarke is getting sick of paying for other teams mistakes for not attempting putting a product on the ice.
clarke is agruement is basically pens got good because they tank season after season. Capitals,Hawks and Pens never spent money until the cap was shoveled down the owners throat.

Crosby was a 1st. (Whom the Pens didn’t “tank” to get, the won him in a league wide lottery)
Fleury was a 1st.(whom the Pens didn’t “tank” to get, the traded up for him)
How is that 4?
2=4?
Wow.
Think before you type.

I wish Clarke(with an E, Pitt fans) was still around to lay a two-hander on Crosby’s ankle like he did to Kharlamov.

Shows why the Flyers are the cheapest, dirtiest fans in the world. Fine, you can absolutely hate the Penguins, I’m fine with that. But to wish a player to get hurt by some scum bag who for some reason is thought so highly of? That’s just crap.

Hey Clark, looks like you have a winning formula! Hahaha. Thank God for the CBA, or teams like the flyers would not be hating life for the mistakes they make. See Briere, and soon to be Pronger contracts.
Clark you are an idiot.
