from Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette via the Star Phoenix,
The Forum was so much more than a building. It was warm. It was caring. It had character, far more than the elephant-sized cold lump of concrete and glass that is the Bell Centre, where loud is good and outrageous ear-shattering music is better - all in the guise of marketing.
The reality is that nothing can replace the Forum, because it was much more than a building for so many of us. It was a second home to the people who worked there, to the well-dressed men bobbing up and down under their fedoras and to the women wearing their Sunday best on so many Saturday nights.
read on..long but oh, what history…

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

My mom is from Montreal, and raised me a Habs fan. I went there in ‘94, with plans to see a couple of games at The Forum, but those were kaiboshed by the lockout. While I did get to go on a tour, complete with a visits to the classic locker room and dormant Coach’s Corner set, it just wasn’t the same. I’d have traded everything else on that day and that trip--including my visit to the Stanley Cup in Toronto--to see the Habs play in that hallowed building just once.
The multiplex that stands in its place? It’s not only a crime against the sport of hockey, it’s a crime against Montreal, Quebec, and Canada, and the history thereof. The provincial government should have stepped in and made it a historical landmark. There aren’t many arenas that would qualify for such an honour, but certainly, if there was only one, it was The Forum.
