To talk to Bouwmeester before July 1, Florida Panthers want a draft pick, which would become a 1st rounder if he signs.

It does seem pretty ridiculous.
The only team that would consider giving up ANY pick (nevermind a first round pick) would be a team that would think they’d have a pretty good chance to sign him, and if you think you have a good chance at signing him, why would you give up a first round pick to do so?

The panthers must realize that its too late now, the ideal time to trade him was last years deadline in which they could have gotten couple of first rounders and a bunch of prospects. Right now i dont think there are lots of teams willing to part with their first round pick

I see this as grasping for straws here. No way is a GM going to give up a 1st rounder when he becomes available to talk to anyone in 1 week.
The Panthers took a gamble and unfortunately it did not pay off for them, when the elected to keep him this past trade deadline. Look to get a 3rd rounder at best Panther fans.
