from Rob Higgins at the Toronto Sun,
So now what??
Well, you’ve survived the first hour without blowing it and Rounds 4 to 23 are where you win this thing. So focus. Remind yourself that the 30 best plays from last season came from only 15 teams, so be selective. Remind yourself that goal scorers and goalies dominate more than a category or two and that Talent, Opportunity and Context are the 3 words that need to come to mind when considering any type of transaction. You can do this.
Round 4:
Get down on your knees and thank the Mighty Queue for allowing Blackhawk Jonathan Toews to slide into your grubby little hands at the top of Round 4.

Unless you’re playing your own self-constructed fantasy hockey pool and draft, the way you win online pools (specifically in online drafts) is by remembering that all sorts of good players will be at the bottom of ranking queues to pick from due to notable injuries last year that curbed their production.
If you keep a watch list on those guys, even with a league of savvy GM’s a couple will always fall through the cracks and you have grab them. It works with Yahoo, ESPN, CBSSportsLine, NHL.com… it’s *always* the case. The person who studies the draft queue the most and knows where those guys that were injured last year are will always get some of those guys in the mid-to-late rounds and they easily make your team. I always have guys set in my watch list that I’m nowhere near erady to take for afew rounds, just so I can keep an eye on them…
Example: I’m in a 14-team Yahoo league that’s been going for some years now with a group of knowledgeable GM’s (most of which showed up for the live online draft) and here are the guys I nabbed that I considered to have “dropped down to me”:
ROUND (Overall) PLAYER
5. (70) Steve Sullivan
11. (154) Zach Bogosian
13. (182) Erik Johnson
15. (210) Justin Williams
17. (238) Eric Brewer
18. (239) Francois Beauchemin
19. (266) Patrice Bergeron
Yes with some of those guys you’re gambling a bit for injuries, but you’re doing the same thing if nabbing a Marty Havlat, Marian Gaborik, etc… and with those guys you’re gambling a whole lot more at a higher draft slot. Once you get to the mid-rounds these kind of guys have a lot more upside than risk as they’re overlooked, and it’s agreta way to fill out your roster slots, including your Bench.
