from Joe Haggerty of WEEI,
Kovalchuk’s agent Jay Grossman and Atlanta general manager Don Waddell are actively discussing a potential contract extension for the player who is the NHL’s leading scorer since the beginning of the 2001 season, but it wouldn’t be shocking if the Russian takes a wait-and-see approach before signing on the dotted line.
If the 26-year-old rugged scoring machine isn’t locked up by the Thrashers, then pay close attention to the Bruins’ interest level throughout the season after they stockpiled draft picks in the Phil Kessel deal. B’s GM Peter Chiarelli now has seven picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts, and he owns five of the first 60 picks in next summer’s well-stocked draft rife with blue-chip talent.

Check his stats.
Since his rookie season when he missed 17 games due to a separated shoulder, Kovalchuk has missed 12 games in the last 7 years. Two have been due to one game suspensions, Hartley scratched him one game, and three were during his contract holdout at the beginning of the 2005 season.
That leaves 7 games he’s missed due to injury in the last 7 years. Kovalchuk’s durability is one of the most overlooked aspects of his game, IMO.

And not only does he generally not miss time for injury, he also does not shy away from contact or confrontation on the ice. So it’s not like he’s skating away from everything at full-speed like so many players do when they see conflict break out on-ice… which makes his track record a little more impressive.
Imagine what kind of numbers he’d be putting up if he ever had a respectable Center to feed him?

Also, I think he feels slighted a bit by the way the MSHM always talks up Ovechkin & Malkin anf kind of leave him out. “The 2 russian superstars”. He wants to be considered with those two players.
