from Carrie Watters of the Arizona Republic,
Friday’s bid deadline for the Phoenix Coyotes included one bid and a near-bid.
A group of Canadian and American investors who came forward earlier this month with interest in the bankrupt franchise filed a letter of intent to bid up to $150 million.
As expected, sports mogul Jerry Reinsdorf waded in with a bid worth up to $148 million.
National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said he was pleased to see that offers to purchase the team were filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
“We look forward to continuing the review and approval process,” he said.
added 7/25/09 at 8:36am, from Paul Waldie of the Globe and Mail,
When Research In Motion co-chief executive Jim Balsillie offered to buy the Phoenix Coyotes and move the NHL team to Hamilton, Anthony LeBlanc was so excited he sent his old boss a letter of congratulations.
But soon Mr. LeBlanc, a former RIM executive, started looking more closely at the Coyotes together with a couple of hockey-loving friends from the investment world. Yesterday, Mr. LeBlanc and his group submitted a letter of intent, offering to buy the Coyotes for $150-million (U.S.) and keep the team in Phoenix.
“Southern Ontario can support another [NHL] team – there’s absolutely no question, and I think Jim would be a tremendous owner,” Mr. LeBlanc said from his home in Ottawa. “It’s just we don’t think that Phoenix is the right team because we think there’s a real savvy business case that can be had in Phoenix.”

I for one care about what is going on regarding the Phoenix Coyotes.
Don’t be so quick to assume that everyone thinks the same way that you do, because not everyone does. Assumptions like that are arrogant and unfounded.

Well, I for one think everything hockey related is interesting and try not to be overly Penguins myopic in my opinions and interests. Two bids for the Phoenix franchise is good news even if one of them is only a ‘near-bid’.
Hopefully, every party involved are dedicated to finding a way to make it financially viable for everyone.

I know you are mighty contributor to this site and I agree with you on almost all of your posts. You are really a straight-shooter and logical thinker. My point is that no one on the outside knows anything about what is REALLY happening. Its all politics. It doesn’t make any sense for anyone to buy this team, unless they are very very passionate about the game. Strictly from a business perspective, if you were trying to generate revenue, would you buy something for $50 if you knew it would COST you $20 annually to maintain? Someone is lining their pockets off this deal and we will never know who it is.
And I’m sorry if your interested in this issue, its like being interested in the new health care plan…its futile. Everything we hear about the Yote’s is filtered, biased information. Its identical to watching CNN and FOX news fight about the heathcare plan. They spin it however they want it to sound and only include numbers that back up their points. If you want to really know whats going on you need to get the court transcripts and read them yourself. If you have, well done. I commend you, but otherwise its really a waste of time.

Thanks dad. This is obvious, that’s why we have blogs, so we can express our views. Good blogs get people fired up. People can’t wait to log on to see what someone wrote. Its never anything good if there’s 1 or 2 comments. Usually, “good signing” or “that’s too bad”.

I almost agree. I love most things related to hockey, but this I find not interesting at all. I would rather speculate about Hossa’s injury or Jagr returning or anything but this. Damn, I might even ponder Mats Sundin’s future if I get desperate enough.

IF Gretzky’s invovled, it’s IMPORTANT!!. Even if it’s indirectly.

Oh, well, you’re right. No one should call you on it if you were drunk.

What a shat article. I don’t get it and no one cares. Really, does anyone who reads this site care about this issue??? It’s all politics and we (the fans) have no part in it. Whoever buys it will somehow make under the table money off some weird scheme that wont be detected for 20 years. BS is all it is. Your team sux and always will, period.
