from AtlantaThrashers.com, GM Don Waddell on the Kovalchuk negotiations…
“Jay Grossman (Kovalchuk’s agent) was in town this weekend and we met on Saturday and Sunday. Again, I continue to say that we have made some progress. We still have a long ways to go. It’s been an interesting negotiations because there’s been so many other factors that have entered into the contract as far as where our team is and where we’re heading. I still remain optimistic that we will get something done. I don’t have any kind of timeframe. We seem to have hit a little snag right now and we’re going to take a little time to re-think our positions and we’ll get back after the holidays.”

He goes east, I think. Far east. Think Russia.

Without a Cup? I’m not sure about that. After he wins one, then yeah . .

He’s said numerous times that he wants a cup. However, one has to think the lure of a ton of tax-free cash would change his mind.

There have been a handful of guys whose mind it didn’t change.
I think the lure is much more there for mid-level players, for guys like Jiri Hudler who would never get a contract that was the equivalent of $5M tax-free.
For a guy like Kovalchuk, who’s made tens of millions of dollars over his career already? I would think the lure of playing for the cup would outweigh the lure of a more inflated salary. At least at this point in his career.
And hey, if a 26 year old multimillionaire were to take the money and run, to me that would say a lot about whether I would want him on my team. Not that my team could afford him, but still…

Makes me wonder where he could end up if negotiations ended. Who gives him the best chance?

Sorry…Kovalchuk has proven NOTHING. He’s not in any place to demand top 5 money. More than Ovechkin and Crosby? Really?!? Nonsense. Atlanta should trade him in a heartbeat for another sniper, setup man, or possibly defensive upgrade(s) that’s a bit more in sync with reality. They’re in good enough position offensively to let him go and could probably get a decent boost in return…a top 6 defenseman and a top 6 wing for him.

Hmm, interesting. If negotiations break down, who gets him? Does he stay in the Eastern Conference or go West?
