There are some names on there I’m not even familiar with. Quentin Laing? But more seriously, what’s with the Rangers not nominating anyone? Surely Sean Avery has done more for the sport than any of these other players.*
* Oh, you mean it’s supposed to be good stuff…

Glen Metropolit.

Aren’t the nominations done by the local writers? Maybe they didn’t think anyone on the Rangers was worthy of the award. Heck, I’m a Rangers fan and I can’t think of anyone on the roster who should be nominated.

Yes, they are done by local writers.
“Heck, I’m a Rangers fan and I can’t think of anyone on the roster who should be nominated.”
Hmmm. The “qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey…” What—that doesn’t just scream “Jagr” to you?!?

Quentin Laing is on the list BECAUSE you’ve never heard of him. He isn’t a star type player either, so you might never hear of him, but he’s dedicated like few others. He’s spent 7 years in the minors and got a chance when he was called up earlier this season due to injuries. He turned a temporary call up into a spot on the regular roster by fearlessly blocking shots, often at the most critical moments of the game; and by playing with an energy that could be seen inspiring the veteran NHLers around him to push that extra bit. It’s because he does so much with heart in the absence of pure skill that he’s Washington’s nomination.

Perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey… If that doesn’t describe Chris Chelios, I don’t know what does.
From the day 25 years ago when he broke in with the Canadiens, to the Blackhawks and then to the Red Wings, he has been dedicated to his teamates, his teams, and the game of hockey.
He is a present-day warrior who sets the standard of perseverance for his teamates and works particularly hard at teaching the rookies.
His work on behalf of the NHLPA, against all odds, has re-created an organization that for the first time is democratic, transparent & well-led, and that will work for the best interests of his fellow players and the NHL itself.
His legacy in the game of hockey will persist long past his playing days.
He is one hell of a human being.
