The Most Interesting Man In The Universe

from Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press,

Wearing a pink coat, Cherry arrived at the Joe flanked by two young ladies aboard a boat on the Detroit River and made his way through the fans outside the arena. Inside he got a hug and a kiss from “my songbird,” Karen Newman.

Budd Lynch, meanwhile, has been doing a taped voice-over: “His reputation is expanding faster than the galaxy. ... His blood smells like cologne. ... He often has awkward moments just because he likes them. ... He’s the most interesting man in the universe.”

from Jeff Z. Klein of SlapShot at the NYT,

With the Red Wings having just gone up 2 games to 0 in the Stanley Cup final, it’s possible we won’t get to come back to Joe Louis Arena to hear legendary P.A. announcer Budd Lynch again this post-season. In which case we won’t get to clear up the mysterious similiarties between his voice and that of the late William S. Burroughs, author “Naked Lunch” and longtime Midwestern literary wild man.

It annoys the heck out of me that neither Versus or NBC will show the pyro and the octopus dropping at the Joe for pre-game.  I don’t expect some big show, but I would think they could spare about 30 seconds in their telecasts to show one of the coolest playoff game openings in the league.
