from Ted Montgomery of USA TODAY,
• You’ve got to believe that Colorado fans are wondering what might have been during the 2003-04 season if Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne had played that year to the level they are both reaching this season.
• Why do I persist in my notion that Jason Spezza could be an even better player than he is currently showing? He’s having a very decent season, but somehow I expected more from him by this point in his career.
• The ridiculous penalty parade persists. Every night I see guys barely touch another player and get whistled off for some imagined infraction. I know the NHL is trying to establish a standard, but sometimes it looks like a no-contact beer league out there.

I’d be interested in seeing penalty data over the course of the season. My impression has been that enforcement slipped a little about a month into the season and is at a lower level than last season, though still relatively high. Watching Center Ice, I still see the occasional game where the refs are calling everything you could imagine might be a penalty, but most of the games are a step back from that.

You know, the more I read this genius’ articles the more It becomes apparent that he must be in posession of some very bad photographs of the sports editor at USA today. The guy is embarassingly uninformed.
Not to mention the fact that he looks like the creature from the black lagoon.

Found this bit by Ted interesting:
“Here’s a radical idea for the Toronto Maple Leafs to consider: Trade Mats Sundin to a contender in March for a bevy of young and talented defensemen, and start anew. While Sundin is a supremely talented player, the team hasn’t won anything with Sundin as its leader, and they really need an infusion of defensive talent.”
Now I’ll forgive him the faux pas of forgetting the trade deadline isn’t in March this year. His trade suggestion, however, overlooks the fact that the Leafs have over $17 million committed in payroll toward four d-men (McCabe, Kaberle, Kubina and Gill) for this season and the next two. Where are this bevy of young and talented defensemen supposed to fit on the Leafs blueline as well as their payroll? And which teams would be crazy enough to part with this supposed bevy of blueline riches?
It’s not a radical idea, Ted. It’s an unworkable one.
