The New Bertuzzi

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

The reading when Todd Bertuzzi stood atop the scale was 226 lb.

It’s been a few years since the Calgary Flames forward played at that weight.

“Uhh, I think in midget or pee wee,” he said. “I had a good year then, so ...”

New city. New team.

New Bertuzzi? At least physically.

Funny, I think Mr. Bertuzzi has the city of Calgary conned with these claims.

Why?

Well the modern snakeoil salesman sold the Ducks and their fans the exact same message last year.

“Physically, there has been a dramatic change. Carlyle said Bertuzzi has shed more than 20 pounds, going from 245-250 pounds to about 230, and his skating has reflected that. Bertuzzi said shedding the extra baggage, at least physically, was a no-brainer.

“I think it was just a matter of time,” Bertuzzi said. “I think after you go through a year of having surgery and having back problems, I think maybe carrying the 245 and 250 around maybe took its toll on it. So I thought I’d try a new route and see if I can stay healthy. Knock on wood, it’s actually been a blessing.

“If anything, I think it’s better; I’m more mobile. Let’s face it—the league is getting quicker and quicker. These kids coming up are faster and faster—and big. I think you either change with the times or you get lost in the shuffle.”“

So Bertuzzi weighed in last year at Ducks camp at around 230 lbs and checks into the Flames camp at 226 lbs?

Hasn’t played at that weight since midget or pee wee huh? Sure….

Bertuzzi is one of the most misunderstood and unduly maligned athletes in sport today.  He is a good person.  Very few people could have weathered all of the attacks upon his character over the last several years.  I don’t care what anyone says… they don’t know him.  The Moore accident was NOT an attempt to injure… It was an attempt to fight, which is what Moore should have stood up to do, instead he turned tail at the last second.  It was earlier that same game that he accepted one fight… with the Canuck’s smallest player (Matt Cooke - a non-fighter) and beat the tar out of him.  What happened with Bert could have happened to any number of players trying to stand up for his team-mates.  I’m not condoning his actions as much as I am saying is… Intent is an important part of my opinion of Bert, and he didn’t intend to break anyone’s neck.  He isn’t even a good fighter.  I hope that people will finally leave it alone and let the man finally move on (you might say that this little blurb is counterpoint to that statement, but really… I am replying to comments I have been hearing about Todd in Calgary).

Bertuzzi is a loyal team-mate and honest person on and off the ice.  If you have any questions about this ask Trevor Linden, Marcus Naslund, or Brendan Morrison; Three veterans who played with him in Vancouver for years.

With Bertuzzi in Cow Town with Iginla and Phaneuf, the Flames are a team to watch this year.  For more about the Flames check out the Flames at: http://flames.nhl.com/
