The NHL Needs To Come Up With Some Answers

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,

Here we are, heading into one of the most anticipated games of this NHL season, for all the wrong reasons. In today’s meeting, Wolf Blitzer’s producers are saying, “Don’t forget to record that hockey thing tonight. Someone might get killed.”

Fact is, you don’t need a grudge match between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins to find a clip of someone getting clobbered. Right now, we’re averaging one spectacularly dirty play per night. The GMs maintain there are only about six hits per year the league must eliminate, but the players appear determined to prove them wrong.

The latest offender is Anaheim’s James Wisniewski, who ran Brent Seabrook late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning.

“He’s one of my really close friends,” Wisniewski told The Orange County Register after the game. As the old saying goes, who needs enemies?

“When did it become legal to hammer guys without the puck?” one player asked, about 10 hours before this incident. It’s a good question, but, then again, there are a lot of good questions going unanswered right now.

dear media/bloggers,

stop, for god sakes stop.  you don’t have to be outraged over every freaking hit every night.  of course there are some cheapshots here and there and I’ll agree with the cooke incident, but you are ruining the focus on the game.  this is no different than any other year.

hell, this last one wasn’t even that bad.

so please, just stop.  write about the fact that there is a hell of a playoff race going.  appreciate the great hits, know that this is a contact sport and injuries do happen, just stop whining about every freaking hit.

As a Red Wings Fan I am satisfied that our biggest hitter, Kronwall, aka “masher” always seems to deliver solid checks to the body. They sometimes look high but rarely elbows to the head, or hits from behind.

Doesn’t Helm have more hits than Kronner this year? Abdelkader was a human pinball - ineffective, but hitting everything in sight.
Regardless, Kronwall IS the BIG hitter. KRONWALLED!

I am a Pens fan and I think the league did the Pens and the Bruins a disservice by not suspending Cooke. Even Pens players seem to agree that Cooke’s hit deserved some kind of punishment. Yet, the league did not use that great opportunity to enforce some discipline.

I dont blame the Bruins for wanting revenge. But this is not on the Pens. Blame the league for their garage league decision making.

At some level, I wonder if Cooke himself wouldn’t have preferred a suspension.

Kronwall missed a good chunk of the season when Laraque gave him that knee.

Stuart has a good number of hits as well.  He’s a good hitter, not as glamorous as Kronwall though.

Helm is crazy.  Dude takes the worst of half the hits he gives (or tries to give) but he keeps trying.  When you see a guy trying to deliver a hit and bouncing crazily off it’s because he used his BODY, not his hands.  Meaning it was clean.

Some players could learn form that.
