The NHL On NBC

Three exciting games to kick-off the NHL season on NBC. Overall a good first showing from NBC and they did get lucky with the games remaining so close which hopefully held and maybe attracted viewers on a Saturday afternoon.
The NYR-Wings game looked OK in HD. Some of the cameras were SD (standard definition) and the PQ (picture quality) was not as sharp as many of us have come to expect with HDTV.
One thing I must point out is if NBC continues to use the shift clock, move it up to the top, either on the left or right side. No need to have a drop down of it.

I think that if you look past the dumbed-down commentary and explanations, they did a great job.
I really liked third commentator between the benches. It gives you a great ‘sideline reporter’-esc access. It especially helped when determining what the goal review was looking for. I wouldn’t mind seeing it implemented for every game, though it would be difficult to do on a local broadcast. I don’t know if there is enough room for more than one bench reporter. As both teams have local broadcast rights, you would need either one reporter to work for both broadcasts, reporters switching between periods or say that the home team has first dibs.
The goalie helmet cam looks promising. Too bad they couldn’t use it today, but I liked seeing Weekes footage taking warm-up shots.
The shift tracker is an interesting concept. I wonder if they can do something more with it because as it is, it isn’t too special.
The intermission report in Rockefeller plaza was a clever idea when they use the rink to demonstrate moves. OLN did this off of the ice, but placing it on a rink makes it so much better.
The gameplay interface and scoring overlay was attractive and not intrusive, where as I find OLN ugly and in a terrible location where it is sometimes awkward to view the score. I hope they don’t continue to have problems every game like they did in the first.
Bottom line, I found today’s broadcast enjoyable (minus the commentators). Definitely better than OLN. If you could combine Fox Sports Net Detroit’s commentators with NBC’s presentation, I think you would have a broadcast that could kick CBC’s and TSN’s butt.
I was lucky enough to watch today’s game in HD. I hope I enjoy next week’s game on NBC when it won’t be in HD. They really should broadcast every game in HD. It was almost better than being at the Joe.

I live in PA now, and we got the Avs/Flyers game. The game WASNT in HD and the sound on the game was terrible. It sounded like they were talking through an old transistor radio. I cant believe NBC didnt have all of these games in HD and just not the Rangers/Wings.
