In order to get a closer look at how the NHL’s salary structure is evolving, I took the 20-man rosters of all 30 teams from two time periods — early in the 2003-04 season and at the end of the regular season of 2006-07, this past campaign — and ran that 600-player sample through a spreadsheet.
So, what’s the difference between salaries prelockout and postlockout?

Given that the salary cap’s hampered top-end salaries, it’ll be interesting to see where those figures stand now that the higher cap’s led to pre-lockout salaries--star UFAs are receiving $10 million salaries; the price for a 60-70 point-scoring forward has jumped from about $3.5 million to $4.5+ million; top four defencemen are earning $4+ million; and starting goalies now hover around the $4 million mark…
