The Over 35 Team

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,

While the number of younger players seems to rise every year, that doesn’t mean there’s no place for players whose playoff beards come in with a few gray hairs. No club would want a roster full of graybeards, but there’s a sizeable contingent of over-35 players who are more than capable of keeping up with the kids. Even with the departures of older stars such as Jeremy Roenick, Teppo Numminen and Sergei Fedorov, the NHL’s over-35 club is alive and well

Using the NHL’s postseason All-Star team format, here’s a look at the best of today’s oldies but goodies:

FIRST TEAM

Goaltender

Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils
Age: 37

Jason Blake is first team, but no love for Daniel Alfredsson?

Never let reality get in the way of a chance to appease leafs fans, NHL.com!

Apologies for the double post, but I have become more incensed.

Alfie has better stats than Blake not only last year but throughout his career since winning the calder. He’s also lead his team to the cup final.

Blake isn’t even ‘over’ 35 for christ’s sake!

Alfie has also been better than Kozlov for his entire career despite scoring 2 fewer points in 3 fewer games last season…and if last season is the measuring stick than Alfie was probably at least as good as Selanne on a worse team.

Alfie’s a captain. He plays the powerplay. He kills penalties. He’s strong at both ends of the ice.

No love. Not even an ‘honourable mention’.

Alfie is also a classy guy with a diversely talented game who has held together a really messed up locker room for a while now.

I share in your frustration.

@ anyone

Does anyone else think that Scott Niedermayer sacrificed a Nick Lidstrom like career (better offence/chance @ Norris’) playing in the Devils an offence? Maybe even Scott Stevens to a lesser degree?

Alfie is overrated and never shows up when it counts.

Kozlov has won cups, Selanne has a cup… only cup Alfie can get his hands on are his teammates. (j/k)

I do agree though that he should be given consideration over Blake though.

Alfie is definitely much better than Blake.

He would have better offensive numbers but wouldn’t be an all around d-man to the level he is now. If you mean that he should have stayed the cornerstone of one team, then yes, he definitely should have done that.

But better offensive numbers should not mean more Norris trophies, you know that.

If winning a cup is the entry ticket then where’s Kovalev?

I believe that, I not so sure about KNOWING it though. I don’t think the PHWA know it or believe it.
Case in point: The 2008 Norris Trophy voting had Lidstrom distant third behind second place Mike Geen and his 31 goals.

With the exclusion of Alfredsson and Kovalev and listing Blake for this #1 team, you know there’s pro-Leafs, anti-Senators bias in that article.
