The Perfect Man For The Leafs Job

from Jim Kelley at Sportsnet,
My target: Ken Holland, the general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. There are others and some of the unencumbered mentioned above have their appeal, but if you want the best man in hockey today, it’s Holland. Getting him won’t be easy or cheap, but it’s not exactly mission impossible either.
Start with a subtle overture. Sources have told me that Holland isn’t put off by the challenge of rescuing the most poorly run rich franchise in the National Hockey League. He’s not afraid of the demands of the legion of long-suffering fans or the oft-times hostile and over-abundant media.
A few nights ago, Fan590 radio in Toronto reported that the Leafs did contact Ilitch about 6 weeks ago for approval to talk with Holland and Jim Nill, their request was turned down.

Kelley is spewing such hyperbole that it’s hard to tell if he’s serious or if he’s satirizing (is that a word?) the rest of the Toronto media.
There are many things that quickly and completely throw Kelley’s ideas into disregard. I’ll stick with the one that jumps out at me the very most:
If Kelley suggests that it would take Mats Sundin, a prospect, and a high-round draft pick to convince Ilitch to let the Leafs have Holland… isn’t that just taking away one of the very few reasons Holland would want to go there in the first place? Toronto is already pathetic when it comes to quality players in the pipelines. Why would Holland want to go to a team that had to give away extremely precious picks and prospects just to get him? So he can get fired that much sooner because MLSE doesn’t understand that because of the way they’ve bankrupted the club’s talent pool that Holland would need five years to turn it around?
Nevermind the fact that this is all with the assumption that Holland wants the Leafs job to begin with…

I do think that whoever does take the job demand a box in which to put all the extraneous advice-spewers, though. That is actually an excellent idea.

Oh jeez...what else is new? We heard this speculative talk last month when the Laffs lost to the Coyotes in Phoenix. This is the second or third time in about six months the Laffs have made contact with the Wings to pick apart the organization to fix their problems.
Like you told me the last time, Paul, “There’s too many bosses in TO.” The sooner they figure that out (read: get rid of the red tape), the sooner their rebuilding efforts get under way.
