from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,
Before we launch into today’s topic, here’s a trivia question: What do the following players have in common? Rick Ley, Al Hamilton, Ken Daneyko, Yvon Labre, Barclay Plager, Johnny McKenzie, Bob Nystrom and Dale Hunter. And you can’t give the Cliff Clavin answer from Jeopardy, “Who are eight people who’ve never been in my kitchen?”
OK, time’s up.
If you guessed they’re nine average to above-average NHLers, you’d be right. But the more interesting distinction shared by these players is this: They’ve all had their numbers retired.

This non-issue is becoming a hot topic lately. Who cares what criteria a team uses to retire a number? The Canadiens still have 86 numbers to dole out and they have the most. Does it really matter what numbers the Hartford Whalers have retired at this point?
PS
Yvon Labre along with Hunter are by the Caps.
