The Shootout Debate

from Alan Ryder of the Globe and Mail,

Like it or spite it, the shootout is embedded in the rule book and it shows no sign of evaporation. NHL leadership has firmly embraced it. The fans are electrified by it. General managers, coaches and players need to embrace it, too….

There have been 337 shootouts in NHL history and there have been clear winners and losers since the shootout was introduced to resolve ties:

read on to see what teams have done very weill in the shootout and what teams have not…

I take exception when people say that the shootout has brought clear winners and loser. You get a loser point for losing during the shootout so there is no clear loser, just a free point. This allows teams to sit back for the final 10 minutes of the third to take the “gimme” point and then hope for the best in OT.

Or, if the team is good in a shootout, they play the OT as if they’re just holding on to get to the shootout.  The Rangers did that recently, either against Toronto or Philadelphia, I can’t remember.  Sean Avery had the puck with 10-15 seconds left in OT and abruptly turned around and skated back to his own zone to wait for the shootout instead of trying for one last play.  I understand wanting to get the win, but it doesn’t always lead to exciting hockey.
