The Showcase Game

from Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press,

It’s a showcase for the next hot rivalry in professional sports.

The Wings and Penguins possess all the natural ingredients—skill, antagonism and, perhaps most important, the likelihood they’ll meet again in years to come.

The teams could meet for a third straight time in the finals next year, so winner beware.

Revenge is the lifeblood of any legitimate rivalry.

The NHL has struck the mother lode.

NBC may be looking at a ratings bonanza Friday night because they have two star-laden teams and two more traditional hockey franchises. The Wings are one of the Original Six. The Penguins are part of the Next Six that came into the league for the 1967-68 season.

Ahhh, Drew Sharp.

Amid all the excitement and frenzy in Hockeytown for the next few days, rest assured he’s already got an article in the hopper, ready to go. The gist of the article: nobody likes hockey, and Detroiters would rather watch basketball.

Can’t assume this.  In the cap world, nothing’s a given.  Everyone knows the Wings roster will look different in the next couple of years, as will the Pens.  One could assume that they’ll meet for the third straight time next year, but it’s even more likely that this is the last chance either team gets for a while.

Wings and Pens fans should enjoy tomorrow as much as they can.  Getting another chance isn’t a certainty.  Hell, the Wings won 4 out of 5 times between ‘51 and ‘55, and didn’t win again until 42 years later.  Never assume.
