It you were watching the Devils/Flyers game this afternoon, yes, that was a smoke bomb/flare that was tossed on the ice during the OT period.
MSG+ showed a replay of the event with one of the Philadelphia players actually picking it up and carrying it towards the maintenance crew.
Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice said the bomb actually filled the arena with sulfur too. Tom has another blog about this…
Hope the person responsible was caught and not allowed back in the building again!
added 7:35pm, Watch a video of the Smoke/stink bomb/flare below…
added 6:06am 10/26/08, from Mark Everson of the NY Post,
A hostile crowd is the accepted burden of a pro athlete. Having to play under attack from a flaming missile tossed out of the stands is not part of the contract.
This one - possibly a road flare of the kind used during highway emergencies - flew toward the ice, flaming and smoking, landing next to the bench where the Devils were trying to coax victory out of overtime last night.
The missile erupted in acrid smoke that chased coach Brent Sutter and his staff into the runway and left the visitors looking to see if another was headed their way.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

I’m sure there are some Latin American and Middle Eastern soccer clubs and fans thinking, “So?”
But this is the first I’ve heard of it in an NHL arena and I’ve been following this game since 1980.
I agree, though, with the blacklisting of that idiot. There are tons of cameras everywhere in the arena. I’m sure they’ll get the guy.
