I’m not one to get behind the newest “gimmick,” but the S17’s elliptical design is based on sound science—a stick loads energy both when it strikes the playing surface and strikes the puck, but it loses energy as it’s a square stick attempting to move in a circular motion, and the energy dissipates throughout the shaft. The ellipse allows the woven graphite fibers to load more energy as the stick strikes the ice and strikes the puck, providing more potential energy to convert to kinetic energy when one follows through, and, moreover, the ellipse helps reduce deformation of the shaft and blade, thus giving the shooter more accuracy as the stick blade doesn’t “open up” by torquing and wobbling.
Put simply, this isn’t a gimmick. It really works.
