The ‘Supplemental Player’ May Be The Target

More and more, it looks as though the NHL trade deadline, circa 2009, is going to be about players in (Gary) Roberts’s category, ones who can fill a supplementary role on a team, but will not necessarily lead them to the Promised Land.

Getting those old-fashioned blockbuster deals done, during these rapidly changing economic times, is proving to be a difficult, if not impossible challenge, for the men at the controls.

With so much uncertainty over the industry’s direction, general managers are collectively turning into an ultraconservative bunch. Fewer and fewer seem willing to risk big in the go-for-broke manner we’ve seen in past deadlines.

For proof, consider how the New Jersey Devils went the safe route yesterday, acquiring Niclas Havelid from the Atlanta Thrashers to fill their need for a puck-moving defenceman.
