The Thrill Is Gone

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
There seems little doubt now that the Wings will capture their fourth Cup in 11 years sometime in the next 7-10 days, with the number of games it will take them to finish off the punchless Penguins seemingly the only uncertainty.
“Oh, we can play better,” said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock.
The shame of it all, unfortunately, is that it appears unlikely that this confrontation will meet the promise it once held, the possibility that it would evolve into the kind of thrilling series that would excite traditional hockey fans and make the greater North American sports market sit up and marvel at the NHL’s brand of entertainment.

Hm… So the thrill is gone because Detroit is up two games? Would the pundits be saying the same thing if the situation was reversed? If Gary’s baby boy was winning would would they say how boring’s it’s all gotten? Or would they be talking about how awesome it all is?

As Mike Babcock and anyone on the Red Wings would tell Mr. Cox, the series is still far from over. And as far as the thrill being gone, all I have to say is that here in Red Wings nation, it’s barely even begun!
GO WINGS!!!!!

“Oh, we can play better,” said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock.
I just love this guy!
And as for Cindy’s proclammation on Monday that the Pens would dump the puck in and then they would either get it back or the Wings would be “forced” to take a penalty, Cox accurately describes what actually happened…
...Pittsburgh’s attempts to play more dump-and-chase hockey last night barely caused the Wings to even shrug, as time after time they coolly retrieved the puck and exited their zone in one or two tape-to-tape passes.
As Babs said…
“The more they give up possession, the more we’re going to have it,” said Babcock.

Maybe we won’t have to hear about how great Cindy Crosby is when he gets shut out in four straight games. He is SO overrated.
He can’t do it all alone. He was the best Penguin last night by far, and managed 6 of the team’s 22 shots on net.

I agree with NHLJeff. At least he was trying - it seemed as though the other players on the ice with him at the same time were just watching him and waiting for him to do something.
He had a couple really nice setups, too, but whoever he passed to either missed the net or whiffed each time.
I’d hold off on his ultimate over-rated-ness until he has a few more years experience and some teammates who actually bother to help him out once in a while when it isn’t as easy as it has been for the team most of the season.

Maybe we won’t have to hear about how great Cindy Crosby is when he gets shut out in four straight games. He is SO overrated. I can’t totally blame Pittsburgh, though. The Eastern Conference is horrible. Any one of the top six teams in the West would have won the Cup. If you want a good series you need to change the Finals format....or bring back Edmonton vs Carolina. Personally, I expected a Detroit sweep. Ottawa and Philly were NOT good teams. The Rangers were the only decent team Pittsburgh faced and with a couple bounces and some good refereeing would have beaten them. Oh and the fact that Lundquist choked didn’t help either....
