The Trouble With Avery

from Mike Heika at the Dallas Stars Blog,
I like Sean Avery’s game. He’s ultra competitive, he has some skills, and he can help a team win in the short-term.
My biggest concern is the Stars have tied themeselves to him for the long-term with the four-year, $15.5 million contract they signed this summer….
But here is my concern about Avery _ I believe he has bought into his own hype far too much. He is performing pretty much all of the time now. In interviews, in appearances, in games, he is trying to live up to the legend he has created. And, in my opinion, that will eventually wear on people (and probably wear him down).

Welcome to reality land, Mr. Heika.

I think his novelty will wear off in about 2 years in Dallas, where he will then possibly be bought out. In the meantime, Avery really should be a valuable asset to the Stars, especially come playoff time.

You mean, for the first round of the playoffs. The past 2 years his impact has dropped off significantly after the first round.

Well, the damned created an Avery rule about goaltender obstruction. It wasn’t Avery’s fault! ![]()
Hey, I’m just speculating mostly. And the Rangers as a team couldn’t make it past round 2.
Imagine playing in a playoff round against Ott and Avery. That isn’t going to be much fun. The Stars are ready to take the next step in the playoffs, and I think Avery will help that. Just my opinion.
